Tiny Home Builders – What You Need to Ask

By Lisa

Just because it’s smaller, many people are under the impression that a tiny home is easier to build. In some ways, it’s easier, but it presents many challenges for creating a functional space that isn’t cramped. Even professional builders and contractors will have to do plenty of research and planning before taking on the building of a tiny home.

You need to make sure that you don’t hire someone inexperienced. You need to find the top tiny home builders in your area so that you aren’t plagued with problems on down the line. We will go over five important questions you need to ask any tiny home builders you are considering.

Can Your Tiny Home Go On The Road?

A tiny home will have to stand up against heavy winds and maybe even, earthquakes. If you are getting a tiny home built to take on the road, your tiny home must be able to handle the journey. Be sure that the trailer your house is built upon has a system that will minimize the bumps and tension that a mobile tiny home has to endure. You will have to make sure that the contractor engineers the walls and roof to allow for this type of movement.

What Is The Weight Of The Home?

If you are going on the road with your home, your home will need to be as light as it possibly can. The material must be strong enough to withstand the elements and not be so heavy that it can’t be pulled. It can get quite expensive when towing a home that weighs too much. It could also damage the trailer. Make sure you ask what materials will be used to build the home.

Moisture

All small homes have to worry about moisture problems. There must be sufficient ventilation to let the moisture escape. For a mobile tiny home, you must have an undercarriage that can stand up to wet roads. Your contractor will need to know how to seal your home against weather conditions while allowing moisture from inside to escape.

Insulation

You will need to ask the contractor which insulation options are best for your area. If you are going on the road with it, you will need your home to stay warm when it’s cold out and stay cool when it’s hot outside. Make sure that the contractor you go with isn’t only insulating the roof and walls. The floors and the trailer must be insulated and weather resistant.

Electricity and Plumbing

You have to decide on which type of energy system you will be using. You will also have to determine which appliances you need if you are going for solar power. The plumbing will have to installed as well. Decide on what type of bathroom you want and whether you want an independent water system or if you will be connecting to city utilities and plumbing.

Ask these questions before you begin building your tiny home. Always make sure that whoever you employ, they have experience building tiny homes. Ask for references and check online reviews. Try to get bids from at least three contractors but the more contractors you inquire about, the better your chance of getting exactly what you need.
